What inspired you to pursue a career in design?
I had always had a passion for architecture and this became more evident as I travelled. From London, Canada to London, England. From the Maasai Huts to Sagrada Familia and back home to the classic New Zealand bungalow which I grew up in. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity, when my children were young, to retrain and follow my passion.
How would you describe your design philosophy in a few words?
Clean, intentional, empathetic and client focussed.
What’s the most rewarding part of being a designer?
Seeing your projects come to fruition is very satisfying, but the biggest reward comes from seeing the joy and happiness on the face of the clients.
How do you define great design?
Great design should be harmonious between functionality, aesthetics and usability.
Who or what has influenced your design style the most?
I have always been inspired by the mid-century modern aesthetic, and there are several famous architects from that era which I admire. My favourite book is about the Case Study Houses which were experiments in residential architecture in post-war America, most of which I would still be happy to live in today.
What’s been your most rewarding project so far?
A holiday home on Lake Hayes. The views are incredible; the site was small and challenging; and the clients were fabulous to work with.
How do you approach balancing aesthetics and functionality in a project?
This requires a thoughtful, user-centred design approach, integrating both form and purpose from the beginning. Every client is different and it is all about listening to the their needs, wants and wishes.
How do you ensure a design remains timeless?
By avoiding as much as possible the trends of the day. Stay true to your design aesthetic.
What’s your favourite phase of a project?
Visiting our clients once they have moved in to their new home.
How do you ensure each project feels unique?
That’s easy! Each project is unique. Each client is different, their needs and wants are different. This results in each house having a completely different floor plan, one that suits the client. Each client has a particular look they are drawn towards, so that helps guide the overall look.
What’s the most important factor when collaborating with clients?
Listening.
