Simplicity with Purpose
The home’s architecture is defined by two intersecting rectangular forms — the upper volume cantilevered over the lower to create a sense of balance and lightness. Achieving this apparent simplicity required careful planning and precise detailing. As we often say in the studio, the simplest ideas are the hardest to execute well.
A single folded steel plate forms the sculptural staircase, anchoring the home and allowing light to pass between floors through fine vertical balustrades. The palette throughout is restrained and tactile — Arkstone Silver tiles, walls in Resene Black White, and accents of timber and stone that add quiet warmth.
Living Lightly
The interior design continues the language of simplicity. A 4-metre-long marble kitchen island forms the centrepiece of the upper level, balanced by dark cabinetry and soft drapery. Spaces flow effortlessly between cooking, dining and relaxing, with natural light animating the rooms throughout the day.
Upstairs, the master suite extends the home’s calm, tonal rhythm. Veneered cabinetry, custom joinery and integrated lighting maintain a sense of clarity and order. Each detail — from the concealed wardrobe lighting to the subtle wall textures — was chosen for its balance of function and beauty.
Framed for the View
Floor-to-ceiling glazing captures uninterrupted views across the city. The upper balcony, equipped with automated blinds and glass balustrades, creates an all-season retreat for morning coffee or evening views. Planting by Texture Landscapes softens the architecture, grounding the home within its hillside setting.
Minimal Yet Inviting
While minimalist in expression, the home feels inviting and lived in. Deep, comfortable seating and carefully selected furniture — including the Benjamin Ripple Oval dining table and Matteo Modular sofa — bring a sense of ease and texture without clutter. The result is a home that feels composed, but never cold.
Built on Collaboration
This home was brought to life through a close collaboration with Metzger Builders and Lume Design. Every line, junction and material was resolved with precision — a shared commitment to creating something enduring and considered.
