While we're often afforded the luxury of designing homes on generous rural sites, we equally relish the challenge of creating that same sense of calm and retreat within an urban environment.
Luxury was once measured by size. Today, it's measured by something far harder to achieve—a home that feels completely your own.
As our neighbourhoods become denser, privacy has become one of the defining challenges of residential design. The question isn't how to shut the world out, but how to create a sense of retreat while remaining open to light, landscape and the rhythms of everyday life.
It's More Than Screening
Privacy isn't created by taller fences or more planting. The best solutions are often built into the design itself. A carefully positioned courtyard. A framed outlook to a garden rather than a neighbouring home. Windows that capture sunlight while directing views with intention. These are the quieter moves that shape how a home feels.
Designing for What Matters
The most successful homes don't simply maximise a site—they understand it.
Orientation, neighbouring properties, existing trees and the path of the sun all influence how spaces are arranged. When these elements are considered together, homes can feel remarkably open without ever feeling exposed.
Our Three Roof House is a good example. Although positioned within a blue-chip suburban setting, the home was deliberately set well back from the street, creating a generous arrival sequence that establishes a sense of separation before you even step inside. Beyond the threshold, a series of sheltered courtyards, carefully framed views and layered landscaping create privacy without sacrificing openness or natural light.
A Sense of Retreat
Scale will always play a role in residential design, but it's the experience of a home that leaves the greatest impression. For us, thoughtful design is about shaping homes that feel generous, refined and enduring—where every decision contributes to a greater sense of calm and connection.
Planning a new home or renovation? One of the most valuable conversations to have early in the design process is how you want your home to feel—not just how you want it to look. When privacy, light and connection are considered from the outset, the result is a home that continues to reward its owners long after it's complete.
